Quality First Teaching

 Quality First Teaching promotes achievement by:

• creating a safe, happy environment for learning
• promoting independent learning
• having high expectations for all and sharing clear expectations
• engaging and motivating learners
• empowering learners to take responsibility for their own learning and progress
• developing resilience through supported risk taking. 

SEN Support

Class teachers, supported by the senior leadership team, make regular assessments of progress for all pupils. Where pupils are not making expected progress, extra support will be given. Special educational provision is education that is ‘additional to or different from’ that of others of the same age ie provision that goes beyond the adapted approaches and learning arrangements normally provided as part of quality first teaching. Once a potential SEND need has been identified, school takes action to put extra provision in place. This is ‘SEN Support’ which takes the form of a four-part cycle – assess, plan, do, review. This is known as the graduated response.

Education, Health & Care Plans

If a child continues to experience significant difficulties, despite receiving support through the graduated response, it may become necessary to apply for an Education, Health & Care Needs Assessment. Parents & Carers views and feelings are sought throughout this process and form part of the written request. Following the assessment, the local authority may issue an EHC Plan if it considers that the special educational provision required to meet the child’s needs cannot reasonably be provided from within the resources normally available to mainstream schools.
